Things to Do & See
Hale ‘Ae Kai sits in the middle of many of the natural wonders of the
Big Island. Sitting directly across the road from the ocean, we see
and hear whales during the winter months, watch the dolphins swim
by and see the honu (turtles) pop their heads above the surface of
the water.
- Kehena Black Sand Beach is a beautiful 2 mile walk from the hale
- 4miles past that is Verna’s drive-in for local kine grinds
- Kalani Oceanside Retreat offers an array of classes, beautifully
prepared meals, and day pass access to facilities
- Also close by are volcanically heated warm ponds, steam vents
and amazing snorkeling at the Kapoho tide pools
- Pahoa town is a 20 minute drive to restaurants, shops, and the
Sunday farmers’ market
- Hilo town is a 35 minute drive to more restaurants, shops,
museums, botanical gardens, movies, and the Tues & Sat farmers’
market
- Volcano National Park is less than an hour drive. And a phenomenal
site like no other!
- The Hamakua coast, north of Hilo, boasts spectacular hikes,
waterfalls, and the awe-inspiring Waipi’o Valley

ideal guide book for your travels to the Big Island.
